One would like to hope that much of this decline is because it's no longer cool to beat up the gay-looking kid.

Thanks for posting the information, and the link to the study. I just spent five minutes skimming the study and didn't see any analysis on why things have gotten better.
It would be interesting to know how this level of violence compares with the last twenty or thirty years.
