Protesters were able to picket extremely close to the contestants just before they competed in the Cabbage, Broccoli, Spinach and Asparagus eating portion of the contest.

Philipino authorities decided to try a new protest/ riot control method using local bar girls in bikinis. The girls succeeded in quieting down the protesters until one of the girls was seen using an aerosol hairspray, then all hell broke loose.
