Data Visualization: Tides Versus Koch

Trivia Tidbit of the Day: Part 966 -- The Left-Wing Tides Foundation Escapes Scrutiny, Despite Funding Far More Causes Than The Kochs-

Some startling facts from the Washington Examiner about the liberal Tides Foundation's funding of left-wing causes versus the Kochs' funding of center-right causes, bumped up against the number of mentions by some of our nation's most venerable and virtuous purveyors of truth-telling and righteousness, those paladins of the free world itself, those champions of a just and harmonious society, the New York Times, Washington Post, New Yorker magazine, and Common Cause:

A few details:

1,130 - Number of results for search term "Koch Brothers" on The New York Times web site.

64 - Number of results for search term "The Tides Foundation" on The New York Times web site.

....

Similar results appear from the same searches on The Washington Post web site, which turns up 277 links to the Koch Brothers and 11 for Tides. And on the New Yorker web site, Koch Brothers generated 35 links and none for Tides.

The contrast was even more dramatic on the Common Cause site, where the Koch Brothers were linked 4,560 times versus one for Tides.

....

Three Koch foundations made a total of 181 grants worth $25,405,525 in 2010 (most recent available records). The one Tides Foundation made a total of 2,627 grants worth $143,529,590 in 2010.

What's really driving the leftstream media's obsession with the Kochs is not some disinterested fact-finding mission into the murky caverns of political finance. It's not some righteous triumph of objective muckraking aimed at equally and ecumenically exposing scummy, cigar-filled backrooms to disinfecting beams of sunlight. The respective Tides/Koch disparities between funding and mentions is just another example of the establishment media's persistent, pernicious left-of-center ideological bias.

The next time someone on the left starts yapping about the Koch Brothers, show them this graphic and have them read this piece. Then ask them whether their conspiratorial (I'm just assuming, here) hyperbole about the Kochs' scary, corrupting money also applies to their Tides Foundation, which doles out more than fourteen times more grants and nearly six times more money to leftist causes than the three Koch Foundations together give to conservative ones.
